Stunning 1930s BULOVA “Lone Eagle” Men’s Vintage Watch – Rare Tonneau Case with 13AF Movement. A very rare treat.

This is a rare and exceptional example of a 1930s Bulova “Lone Eagle” men’s wristwatch, housed in a distinctive tonneau-shaped 14K white gold-filled case with black enamel bezel accents—an elegant and highly collectible piece of horological history.

A Watch with a Split Personality

The Lone Eagle model from this era has long intrigued collectors due to a somewhat confusing production history. This particular watch features the 13AF movement—a tonneau-shaped caliber specifically designed for this unique case style. In a twist that has puzzled enthusiasts for decades, Bulova briefly replaced this movement with the round 10AN in later models using the same case shape, making the 13AF variant significantly rarer.

The 13AF movement was introduced by Bulova in 1927 and was tailor-made for rectangular and tonneau cases. The example here dates to 1929 based on the movement’s date code and serial number, placing it at the heart of a key transitional moment in Bulova’s production strategy.

According to the renowned vintage watch site MyBulova, this Lone Eagle II model is a standout due to its correct pairing of the 13AF movement with the matching tonneau case. Unlike its 10AN counterparts, this version features a rectangular minute track and short, cathedral-style hands—subtle but telling signs of its unique design heritage.

    Notes of Particular:

NOTES:  This style of Lone Eagle built for the tonneau shaped 13AF movement is very rare, as many of them carry the round 10AN movement. This case style is the second in the known Lone Eagle series and first made an appearance in 1929, which is the year of the movement in this example.

This below is taken from “My Bulova” web site for full transparency.

1930 was a big transition year for Bulova. Without a doubt Bulova watchmakers had to do comparative analysis to determine cost & manufacturing efficiency & reliability of their current & future products.

Normally, Bulova minute track & seconds chapter outlines are shaped to emulate the shape of the case.  This Lone Eagle II series watch is uniquely different from the Lone Eagle II powered by the 10AN movement  Notice the dial with the rectangular shaped minute & seconds chapter outlines and short stubby cathedral hour and minute hands.  The case frame was made quite different in order to accommodate the 13AF movement. This is not a one-of-a-kind-watch.

I must make a special mention to Bryan Girouard, this watch owes a debt of gratitude to the careful resurrection of a very hard to find model. Thank you Bryan.
