1914, Waltham Cushion Shaped Depollier & Son solid sterling silver case. A highly coveted case from the birth of the wrist watch era. Look long and hard, you may not see another one.

Here is another sublime offering from Vintage Watch Corner. Here is a rare styled case. It is a very hard to find cushion shaped solid sterling silver ( almost 18 grams of solid sterling silver) manufactured by Depollier and Sons, one of the premier Trench Watch Case manufacturers! This case has been completely redone, polished, polished, crown and stem sleeve replaced. I am proud of this restoration.

If you are a WW1 watch collector, this is a case that you have to consider to be in your private collection. They don’t surface often and most of the time they are too badly worn to be considered. Look at the pictures for additional visual descriptions.

What makes this so watch is unusual is the heavy weight case. This was offered by Depollier and Sons as an option for the Waltham Watch company. Not only that this watch has 20 MM lugs, this means they are robust and sturdy.

I love the white Military Shadow Box military dial, a true survivor through the years from not being damaged. A classic Trench Watch Dial. They are getting much harder to find as well.

    What is a “Trench Watch”

What are WW1 or Trench watches? They were created using 3/0 and 0 size pocket watch movements and installing into watch cases that were meant to worn on the wrist.

They often have some of the following characteristics:

Fixed or Wire Lug: No traditional spring bar attachment as found in today’s watches.

Case Material: It or often Solid Gold / Sterling Silver (925) / Silverode or Gold Filled. The case lid snaps snug on the case. This is a solid sterling silver case

*For more practical purposes, a special alloy was developed which went by several different names, such as, "Silveroid, Silverore, Silverode or Silverine. "Silveroid" appears to have become the standard name for this metal that consisted of 45% nickel, 54% copper and 1% manganese. This metal was fairly hard wearing and could withstand the rigors of everyday use, for instance on the Railroads.

Case Manufactures: There were many case manufacturers that made cases for Trench Watches. Some of the more well know were: Fortune, Depollier and Sons, Dennison (English Manufacturer) Illinois (not affiliated with the Illinois Watch Company) Depollier and Sons, Wadsworth, Fahys, Philadelphia and many more

This style of watch represents the epitome of the WW! / Trench Watch ear of timepieces. To the bold military bright white enamel dial in amazing condition to the highly collectible large and heavy solid sterling silver case.

I took the time to carefully restore this case and watch to its former glory. Look at my reviews, I am a nut about original restoration, many sellers don’t or won’t take the rime to put the time, resources and money into each time piece. I do, Sometimes it will take me 8-12 months to restore a watch to find period correct parts.

This Waltham is officially 107 years old this year. This movement was made in 1914! Think about that, 1914, and it is still running.

This is a coveted Depollier and Sons sterling silver case 3/0 size, the case measures the following:

Measuring from 10-3 o’clock: 31.35MM without the crown

Measuring with the crown: 40.00MM lug to lug

I have finished off this restoration with a brand new 20 MM black “Oily Leather” open ended band with white top stitching to round out the period look. The buckle is a highly polished stainless steel tang buckle to complement the high polish of the watch case.

The 07 jewel motor (movement) has been serviced within the last 30 days. The production date is 1914, only 2000 movements were made in 1914, a very low production run.
